Uric Acid Elevation
Increased uric acid (Hyperuricemia) can result in gout characterized by pain and swelling in joints. Left untreated it can lead to chronic arthritis. Hyperuricemia is a metabolic disorder often associated diabetes, Hypertension, abnormal cholesterol levels and these predict increased chances of kidney dysfunction and cardiac diseases.
It’s easier to assume that increased uric acid with symptoms or without symptoms calls for a revamp of lifestyle to avoid long term morbidity.
Following is comprehensive list of products which can influence the blood levels of uric acid. (Discuss with your treating physician and dietician for a customized diet chart)
Low Purine Diet
Cereals: wheat, Millets, Brown rice
Pulse: Split dals
Fruits: Fresh berries, Strawberries, Bananas, Pineapple, Oranges Vegetables: Red cabbage, Lemon, Cabbage, Parsley.
Diary: Low fat milk, curd, cheese , Butter
Poultry: Chicken, Whole egg 3-4 times / week
Fats: Almonds, Walnuts, Flax seeds
Avoid
Bakery foods/ Processed food & Fried foods.
Pulses (masoor, Rajma, Channa, Chole), sprouted dhal.
Fruits & Vegetables – Green peas, Spinach, French Beans, Brinjal, Cauliflower, cashewnuts, avocado
Mushroom, Chickoo, Custard apple.
Meat + Poultry – Meat & meat products, Seafood (shellfish, sardines, mackerel). Processed foods: Pickles, Papads, Chutneys.
Beverages: Reduce tea intake.
Don’t overdo on salt substitutes.
Water intake – increase intake to 3- 4 liters/ day
Important Guidelines
- – Keep a check on alcohol intake.
- – Include coffee, but if hypertense have a check on it.
- – Cherries reduce uric acid, hence try and include in diet.
- – Ensure to drink plenty of water the entire day.
