Spinal Tumor

Spinal cancers can occur at any age. Elderly people develop tumor spillage related deposits in bone especially spinal column that becomes symptomatic.

Depending on the location it can cause back/neck pain with features of neurological compression.

Distinguishing pattern of pain

Severe pain
Rest pain
Associated weight loss
Features of primary malignancy ( Lung/ Upper respiratory tract – blood in sputum ,Stomach – pain, vomiting , abdominal distention ,Urinary tract – increased frequency of urination , blood in urine )

Rarely if the spinal tumor related fracture causes compression of spinal cord/ nerve there can be varying degrees of paralysis of lower limb with loss of bladder / bowel control.

Treatment options include

Braces for pain relief and early mobilization
Cement augmentation procedures of the involved vertebra
Spinal stabilization surgery – titanium pedicle screws are placed in minimally invasive way to avoid blood loss and motivate early mobilization
Rarely completely vertebra excision and reconstruction with titanium implants – these complex procedures are reserved for limited individuals.
